Carla: "My first memory as a child was as a toddler in my highchair tossing food down to our Dacshund named Shotzie. I remember my Mother walking in and asking me if I was feeding my dinner to the dog. I think I denied it. Unfortunately the evidence was against me as food was on Shotzie's back and head. Apparently my aim wasn't good back then! LOL!" Carla has always been around animals. Starting from when Carla was young her family bred Saint Bernards. This included competing in different dog shows and traveling around the West with her mom to learn the ins-and-outs of the dog show circuit. Some dogs Carla has owned when she was young include: Dachshund- Schatzi, Weimaraner- Heidi, Great Dane- Rommel, Doberman Pinscher- Annie, Shih-Tzu- Curtis, Keeshond- Budkis, and 3 short hair cats- Killer, James, & Whiskers. During her adult life Carla has owned 3 Rottweilers- Alex, Abby & Cloe and an English Mastiff- Axel. Carla first started her professional life as a bank teller when she was 18. Rapidly Carla worked her way up to branch manager and was in management sixteen of her twenty-two years in retail banking. During Carla’s many years of retail banking she worked for many banks such as Home Savings & Loan, Western Financial, Wells Fargo, Banco Popular, NuVision Federal Credit Union, and First Security Bank. During her years of bank management, Carla never lost sight of her passion: working with animals. Carla would volunteer at local shelters and veterinary clinics. Eventually the passion won and Carla left the banking world to start a one-woman company called Dog’s Best Friend. Over the years the company grew rapidly and in 2008 acquired three competitors: Pet Minded, a pet sitting company out of Aliso Viejo, Nikki's Pet Sitting in Huntington Beach, and Kritter Kare a care and boarding center out of Long Beach. Dog’s Best Friend kept the Pet Minded name and today Carla’s company has over 600 clients and a staff of over 25 sitters (see some of them below). If you were to ask Carla how she stays looking so young, she would tell you that it’s not her, it’s the love of the pets that keeps her young! David was introduced to animals at the young age of six with his first dog being a German Shephard-Airedale mix. His interest in animals continued with the list of standard young boy’s pets: hamsters, gerbils, gold fish, frogs, newts, crawfish, salamanders, a few baby squirrels and a turtle (sorry- no partridge in a pare tree). David often brought home any animal he could find on the 3 acres he grew up on in rural New Jersey. Finally his parents had to outlaw catching and keeping wild animals as the house was getting over run! At the age of 12 David started to keep snakes: his favorite being an albino corn snake named Klutz. As the years passed more animals came into David’s life. These were mostly dogs & a few snakes. The dogs that have been a part of David’s life include: King- a German Shepard, Frisky the above mentioned Shephard-Airedale mix, Shadow- a Black Lab, Tucker- a Golden Retriever, Shannon- a Wolf/ Husky mix, and Cloe- his present baby Rottweiler who’s picture can be found through out this website. David graduated from Vanderbilt University with a BS in Economics. He used his degree to help start several companies in the past. He was involved in business consulting with a focus on loans for small business and their financial structure in his last endeavor before joining Pet Minded. David often volunteered at animal clinics in his free time near his home in West Los Angeles before joining Pet Minded. Now he is the General Manager of Pet Minded and responsible for customer relations, systems, and work flow.
